Teaching the Fear of the Lord to Growing Children

The Forgotten Foundation

In Deuteronomy 31:12–13, God commands the people—“men, women, and children”—to come together to learn to fear the Lord. This principle hasn’t changed. And in our world today, saturated with distractions and deception, the need to teach children the fear of the Lord has never been more urgent.

In a culture where children are constantly told what to wear, how to think, and who they are, biblical truth must be louder. And one of the most powerful truths a child can learn is that the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.

What Does It Mean to “Fear the Lord”?

The fear of the Lord isn’t terror—it’s reverent awe and moral accountability. It’s the internal compass that guides decision-making, builds character, and roots a person’s identity in God.

This belief system:

  • Anchors a child in truth

  • Protects them from temptation

  • Equips them to stand firm when tested

  • Helps them discern good from evil

📖 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” — Proverbs 1:7

Why Teaching the Fear of God Matters

Here are just a few biblical benefits of teaching this to your child:

  • It begins true knowledge (Proverbs 1:7)

  • It’s the foundation of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10)

  • It helps avoid evil (Proverbs 16:6)

  • It brings peace and protection (Proverbs 19:23)

  • It extends life (Proverbs 10:27)

  • It leads to eternal life (Proverbs 14:27, Luke 12:5)

And most importantly, it prepares them to meet God in righteousness.

Education Without the Fear of God Is Incomplete

We teach children the alphabet, basic math, and world history. But if we don’t teach them about God’s holiness, judgment, and mercy through Christ—we’ve missed the most important subject.

True Christian education should:

  • Explain God’s justice and kindness (Jeremiah 9:23–24)

  • Paint a picture of His character

  • Make them tremble at sin and stand in awe of grace

  • Show them the path to salvation, not just success

Without these truths, their education is partial and temporary.

“Coincidences” Are Often Consequences

Proverbs 26:2 reminds us:

“A curse without cause shall not come.”

What we often call “bad luck” or “life’s mishaps” may, in fact, be the fruit of spiritual disobedience or neglect. The fear of the Lord helps children:

  • Make wise choices early

  • Avoid sinful traps

  • Walk in God’s favor and protection

When children live in reverence, their lives are filled with grace, purpose, and heavenly “coincidences.”

Jesus, the Perfect Example of Reverent Living

Jesus, the wisest man to ever live, walked with complete submission to the Father. Every decision, every miracle, and every word was spoken in obedience and reverence.

“The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom.” — Proverbs 15:33

Jesus showed us that true greatness is rooted in humility and submission to God. Shouldn’t we raise our children to follow the same path?

Final Thoughts: Now Is the Time

Isaiah 54:13 says:

“All your children will be taught by the Lord, and great will be their peace.”

But that peace doesn’t come from random luck or perfect parenting—it comes from fear of the Lord built into their earliest years.

The time to teach this is now—while their hearts are soft and their minds are open.
